As part of this year’s Walk to School Week celebrations, pupils at All Saints Marsh Church of England Academy took part in an exciting local competition run by Teignbridge District Council—and four young winners from the school now have their creativity proudly on display in the heart of Newton Abbot.
The competition invited local pupils to submit original poems or drawings celebrating to be engraved on plaques, which would be permanently displayed on the new tree planters along Queen Street, home to the beautiful new Juneberry trees. The initiative celebrates greener travel, community pride, and the voices of local children.
Entries were judged by a panel made up of representatives from the Town, District, and County Councils, and the competition was tough. Out of many impressive submissions, four All Saints Marsh pupils were selected as winners—a tremendous achievement for our school.
Today, the school celebrated in style with a special plaque unveiling ceremony in Newton Abbot town centre. The children's poems were read aloud to an audience of proud parents, staff, and local dignitaries, followed by a celebratory cake and drinks at a local café to mark the occasion.
Headteacher Liam O'Sullivan shared their pride in the children’s accomplishments:
“We are absolutely thrilled to see our pupils’ creativity recognised in such a meaningful and lasting way. The plaques look incredible, and it’s so special to know their words and artwork will be enjoyed by the community for years to come.”
The school is encouraging families, friends, and residents to visit the town centre and try to spot all four plaques nestled among the planters on Queen Street.
Can you find them all?
We think they look amazing—and we’re so proud of our talented young writers and artists!
